About Us

A History of Philanthropy and Friendship

In April, 1968, nine women residing in the Northwood Hills area of Far North Dallas established NWC to contribute to the community and enjoy old and new friendships. NWC has grown quickly from its nine founders and today has more than 300 members, living in the DFW Metroplex and beyond. On April 24, 2018, our club celebrated its 50th anniversary, and today continues to pursue the vision of its founders.

True to that vision, since its inception, NWC has raised and donated to its charitable beneficiaries over $6,750,000. Through those donations, NWC has provided support to child and family welfare agencies, educational institutions and scholarship funds, health services agencies and institutions, poverty and violence intervention agencies and groups, museums and libraries, and the arts in the DFW Metroplex.

Since 1979, NWC has provided scholarships to over 100 high achieving students at the University of Texas at Dallas who show financial need and a strong desire to continue their education. The club enjoys the distinction of being the second longest continuous benefactor of the University of Texas at Dallas. In 2015, NWC added to its scholarship programs by establishing a scholarship fund with the Community Foundation of Texas. Since its establishment that fund has awarded scholarships to 40 deserving female students resident in Dallas County or Collin County.

To celebrate In its 50th anniversary year, NWC partnered with a single beneficiary, Callier Center for Communication Disorders at the University of Texas at Dallas, and established a $500,000 permanent endowment to support the delivery of care to patients of the Callier Center whose families have limited financial resources.

Over the decades of the club’s existence, the women of NWC have given much more to their community than the moneys they have raised and donated to the club’s beneficiaries. Since the 1968 founding of the club, NWC’s members have provided hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours to community service projects throughout the DFW Metroplex, consistently volunteering over 14,000 annually to the community.  Club members have served and continue to serve on board of directors of several local charitable agencies.

Over the span of its 50 plus years of existence, NWC has found other ways to serve the community in which it members live, from donating and distributing classroom supplies to designated schools to providing toys to children in need during the holidays to providing tons of food to various agencies for the hungry. These projects continue as a part of the NWC legacy of philanthropy.

As devoted as its members are to philanthropy and supporting their community, NWC’s members have continued to understand that part of being a community is maintaining friendships within that community. NWC has provided its members ways to enjoy old friends and make new friends while giving back to their community. Groups of club members, such as bridge groups, lunch groups, and a long-running travel group, have given members the opportunity to make new friends and to maintain and strengthen old friendships, while the club’s monthly meetings often feature outstanding speakers to give members the opportunity to engage in intellectual, cultural, and social development.

NWC has endured through membership changes, changes in our community, moves of numerous members from the Northwood Hills area to the far reaches of the DFW Metroplex, and a pandemic and it continues to be a vital force for good in the community and a focus of friendship among its members. Our members look forward to celebrating many more years of philanthropy and friendship through Northwood Woman’s Club.
